Socialising Meeka

Meeka under the kelpie

Steven and I want Meeka to be the most popular canine in the neighborhood so we try our best to socialise her. Right from the start, we knew that she loves other dogs and humans and we want to keep it that way.

Meeka has met a few cats already and thank goodness, she does not bark at them or chase after them. She loves saying hello though and most cats do not say hello back.

She has met a kelpie cross that is around her age. She loved playfighting with the other dog and Meeka would always go for the legs and neck. She could have been a good fighting dog but of course, we will not go down that path.

She has also met a much much younger rottweiler puppy and we were impressed when she toned down her playfighting. I guess from the yelping of the younger puppy, she realised that she could not be very agressive with a pup that is only learning to run.

Latest family addition

Since we started our relationship, Steven and I have always talked about getting a dog. We  have been visiting the Animal Welfare League in Wingfield and adored many of the dogs there. Steven was keen on getting a kelpie since he grew up with them. I just wanted a small-ish dog so I won't be seen in public picking up a bowl-sized poop.

But we went slightly different in the adoption process. Steven decided on visiting foster families instead so we can learn more about the dogs. A Corgi x Husky x Kelpie was the first dog that we saw in this process and we immediately fell in love with her friendly and welcoming demeanor. We saw another dog but it seemed the latter was not really that interested in us.

It seemed Meeka also chose us so after a week of waiting as she had to be desexed first. It was a windy day when we picked her up from the vet. She was really groggy and behaved very differently from the first time we saw her.

But as the drugs wore off, she came back to her old self. We also had to wait for a 2-week trial period before we can pay the adoption fee and before we can call her officially ours.

More on Meeka in the next posts.
